AI didn’t break assessment.

AI didn’t break assessment.

It exposed how broken assessment already was.

We’ve been doing it wrong long before AI ever came along.

Asking students to explain their writing and thoughts - I love this.

Not because it catches students using AI.

Because it asks them to do something we should have been asking all along:

Explain your thinking.

Defend your conclusions.

Answer questions.

Demonstrate that you actually understand what you submitted.

For decades, we’ve treated the artifact as evidence of learning.

The essay.
The report.
The presentation.
The research paper.

AI has shattered that assumption.

Maybe the answer isn’t better AI detection.

Maybe it’s better assessment.

And perhaps the future of assessment looks surprisingly human.
