Carrots and Sticks Work! Until They Don’t.
Let’s talk about a leadership myth that just won’t go away:
“When you need bigger results, you need bigger carrots and sharper sticks.”
Raise salaries. Dangle incentives. Threaten consequences.
Sure—it works. For a while.
But here’s the truth: compliance isn’t commitment.
Carrots and sticks produce short-term effort, not long-term engagement.
They may buy obedience, but they rarely earn trust, innovation, or loyalty. And they certainly don’t build community.
So what does?
Authentic leadership.
It’s not flashy. It’s not always fast. But it’s real. And it lasts.
Authentic leaders build cultures that run on:
• Relationships – because people work better when they feel known, supported, and respected.
• Recognition – not just for performance, but for growth, effort, and integrity.
• Shared Vision – when people understand the “why,” they don’t need pushing—they bring their whole selves.
If you want a culture of trust and excellence, skip the manipulation. Build the relationship. Share the purpose. Recognize the effort.
Here’s a challenge:
Next time someone underperforms, don’t reach for a stick—or a carrot.
Engage in a conversation, even if it is a difficult one.
Lead with clarity, empathy, and belief in their potential.
Because when people feel safe and seen, they don’t need incentives to show up fully—they choose to.
And authentic leadership isn’t just feel good fluff. It works. It’s effective. Compliance or commitment - which will help you achieve your business goals?
What kind of culture are you building? One of compliance—or commitment?
Let’s talk in the comments.
